LOS ALTOS, Calif.—Chao Foundation is pleased to announce a new grant of $49,131.60 to dloHaiti to support their Clean Water for Schools program. The grant will provide 36% of the budget needed for this program’s academic year (October 2016 – May 2017). Collaboration with other donors such as Unilever, the global consumer product brand, will multiply the grant’s impact. Part of the Chao Foundation grant ($2,339.60) will also support the monitoring and evaluation of the program.

Need for Clean Water in Haiti
More than 70% of the population in rural and peri-urban Haiti lack access to treated water. The lack of public infrastructure means basic resources such as clean water are out of reach of most of the population outside of the main cities. Thus, 90% of the schools in these areas of Haiti, either public or private, are unable to provide clean drinking water to their students. Drinking untreated water in these communities brings broad public health issues, as well as school truancy and lower academic achievement among young students.
Empowering Local Communities
DloHaiti sets up, operates, and manages water treatment facilities in the community to distribute clean water through local entrepreneurs. This model of local empowerment provides water at a price that is 20% lower than what is typically available in these communities.
Water is treated and bottled in 4 and 5 gallon jugs as part of its primary commercial operation. In addition to its regular commercial sales, each site will also deliver treated water in reusable plastic jugs to classrooms from October 1, 2016 through May 31, 2017. A new jug is placed in each classroom every school day so students can drink clean water.

Program Expansion and Impact
In the 2015 – 2016 school year, the program provided clean water to over 11,839 students at 67 schools in 8 disadvantaged regions in Haiti. In the 2016 – 2017 school year, the Chao Foundation grant will increase the number of regions, schools, and students served by the Clean Water for Schools program. Water will be delivered to over 80 primary and secondary schools in under-served communities, benefiting 15,000 students. This will reduce the incidence of school truancy, reduce deaths from diarrheal diseases, and increase awareness of the value of clean water.
