One Heart World-Wide: 2016 Q3 Report

11/22/2016

One Heart World-Wide's mission is to decrease maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in remote rural areas. Our partnership with them is helping women in Bhojpur, Nepal receive skilled birth attendant training.

SBA Training

Pregnancy is a natural process for which medical assistance is not considered as a need or requirement in Nepal.  As a result, many Nepalese women, especially those residing in more rural areas of Nepal deliver at home.  In most communities, traditional birth attendants are usually primary service providers who have never received modern training in midwifery. The lack of training poses a risk to the lives of the women and newborn. Currently, there are only a few SBAs that serve about 45,000 women per year in Bhojpur. One Heart World-Wide has identified several eligible nurses that are on their way to becoming certified skilled birth attendants. Post-training, they will be able to provide the maternity care necessary to conduct safe deliveries in this district.

Newborn Congenital Heart Screening Training and Evaluation Program

The Yunnan Newborn Training Program has the goal of training all rural Yunnan county obstetricians and obstetric nurses to perform proper newborn cardiac examinations. The program, started in 2014, is the largest of its kind in China and one of the largest of its kind in the world.
More than sixty percent of births in rural Yunnan province occur in relatively large county hospitals. This centralization of birthing is the result of a Chinese government campaign to decrease morbidity and mortality during childbirth. County hospital newborn care protocols include testing for metabolic diseases and examination for spinal deformities but do not include routine testing using stethoscope and pulse oximetry for critical congenital heart disease, which is now routine in the United States and in most other developed nations.

The training program and its evaluation have been successful in completing training in about three quarters of Yunnan county hospitals. Screening rates in almost all hospitals exceed 90%. The program has therefore been overwhelmingly successful. However, there are some important problems detected by the evaluation of the program, which are explained in this report.

LOS ALTOS, Calif.—Chao Foundation is pleased to announce a new grant of $50,000 to Children on the Edge, which will provide safe spaces for 554 young children displaced by conflict inside Kachin State, Burma.

Conflict in Burma

Since June 2011 the Burmese central government has been in open conflict with the Kachin Independence Army, following a failure in peace talks to resolve their longstanding conflict. While this conflict dates back decades, the most intense fighting to date has happened over the past four years, forcing almost 100,000 Kachin people to flee from their homes.

As the central government appears determined to crush this remaining pocket of armed resistance in Burma, their tactics have been increasingly harsh. Children on the Edge has collected first-hand accounts from civilians who have been displaced. They speak of brutal violence, ongoing atrocities, bombings, and severe violation of human rights, including rape, maiming, executions, and the burning of villages.

Many civilians have taken shelter inside poorly supplied internally displaced peoples (IDP) camps. IDP camps continue to grow, and those seeking refuge are increasingly bleak about the prospect of returning home to rebuild their lives.

In the seven northern camps of Kachin State there is no other international organization offering ongoing support of any kind. The majority of these camps are in remote, mountain areas, making access difficult. Confined within these camps are thousands of Kachin children with no educational or physical support, and nowhere to escape the daily realities of war. Children on the Edge is uniquely situated to reach the marginalized and vulnerable children in the remote IDP camps.

One Heart World-Wide: Updates from Bhojpur

One Heart World-Wide's mission is to decrease maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in remote rural areas. Our partnership with them is helping women in Bhojpur, Nepal receive skilled birth attendant training.

Skilled Birth Attendant Spotlight: Ms. Bishnu Gurung

Picture
Ms. Bishnu Gurung, Auxiliary Nurse Midwife, has worked for the past two years at Annapurna Health Post, Bhojpur. Two months ago, Ms. Bishnu received Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) training with support from One Heart World-Wide.
"SBA training has given me more strength and courage to save lives at birth."
“This training was beneficial as we learned many clinical technicalities to save and protect both the mother’s and baby’s life. Before this training I was unable to handle the delivery complications. I was in a dilemma before, but now after getting this training I am confident in my ability to save the lives of mothers and newborns by giving them proper care as needed.  Indeed SBA training has given me more strength and courage to save lives at birth.”

Ms. Bishnu thinks that this training has solved a lot of problems that were present previously.
“Before the training there used to be a lot of complications related to the delivery, which had to be referred to the district hospital for management. That took four hours by vehicle and 10 hours by foot. Pregnant women who are referred are always at risk during the transportation. SBA training has improved the way we take care of mothers and newborns by enabling us to manage birth complications locally, unless the case is too serious to be referred.I am really grateful  to One Heart World-Wide for providing financial support for my SBA training, which is helping to save the lives of mothers and newborns in these remote rural areas of Bhojpur, Nepal during and after delivery.”

Updates

Here are some quick updates and snapshots of the work One Heart World-Wide has been doing in Bhojpur.
